I could never harbor disdain or even like someone less than someone else because of something on the outside of them. Honestly, I think these comments you are making are racist. I think it’s sad that you think that if my favourite lyrics don’t come from a black person, I must be racist." - CRYING @ HER BASIC ASS

“Honestly, I think these comments you are making are racist.”

Sounds like someone who responds to criticism by saying, “Why are you yelling at me and not the people in Ku Klux Klan?” tbh. Maybe she doesn’t spit at every black person she sees, but that she doesn’t mean she’s not ignorant for failing to recognize that folks love to deride and devalue rap music for racist reasons, and that her post affirms an existing cultural trend. (“Stupid Hoes” isn’t my Nicki song of choice, but it’s not like her faves haven’t released poor lyrical material. Much as I love Bon Iver, his lyrics can be fucking overwrought.)

I should also add that, even if her post weren’t racist, I’d still think it was basic as hell for attacking hip-hop or pop music. There’s room for both catchy, brainless pop refrains and expert lyricism, folks, and drawing a comparison between the two accomplishes nothing!!! Plus, lyrics can be good without necessarily being hyper-literate! Good pop songs require an understanding of rhythm and other poetic devices!
